Let’s get Chartered! 3

Welcome to the second instalment of 'Let's Get Chartered!'. A series of tips and insights designed to help others specialising in Daylight, Sunlight and Rights of Light (and potentially those in other areas of surveying!) in their RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) journey, based on our lived experience of the APC process.

For this instalment, it's the preliminary review. If you have five years of relevant experience, this option is available to you and involves a review of your submission by trained professionals to determine whether it is suitable to proceed to the final assessment interview. The preliminary review is a critical time in a candidate's assessment process because a successful outcome means that they are on track to sit the final assessment interview at the next session.

The questions the reviewers consider are:

❓ Does the submission comply with the format requirements, including compliance and standard of writing?
❓ Does the submission satisfy the content requirements, including case study and mandatory and technical competencies?
❓ Is the submission suitable for the APC assessors to prepare for and conduct the final assessment interview effectively?

There are two possible outcomes to the preliminary review:

✅ Submission is suitable to proceed (eligible to apply for final assessment at the next available date)
❌ Submission is not currently suitable to proceed (required to resubmit for preliminary review at the next available date)

Whether or not your submission is deemed suitable to proceed to final assessment, the reviewers will provide any feedback they feel would help to improve it, which can be very helpful.

💫 Note: The preliminary review is designed to consider whether submission requirements have been met, not competence. A successful preliminary review provides no guarantee of a successful APC outcome.

There are two APC sessions each year and all dates are updated on the RICS website, so be sure to check them. With preliminary review, the dates for Land and Property pathways (Built Environment dates are different) are generally as follows:

Session 1️⃣

Preliminary review submission - September
Preliminary review result - November
APC submission - February
APC final assessment period - April/May

Session 2️⃣

Preliminary review submission - March
Preliminary review result - May
APC submission - August
APC final assessment period - October/November
