Let’s Get Chartered!

Welcome to the first instalment of 'Let's Get Chartered!'. A series of tips and insights designed to help others specialising in Daylight, Sunlight and Rights of Light in their Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) journey, based on our lived experience of the RICS APC process.

For too long, surveyors in our field faced a barrier to becoming chartered members of the RICS via the APC because of the highly specialised nature of what we do. Surveyors would need to attempt a pathway that was not specific to the specialism, meaning that they would have to satisfy competencies that were not relevant and would require work experience in other areas of surveying if they wanted to succeed. Thankfully, the last few years has seen the release of the Land and Resources (Rights of Light) pathway and we are more keen than ever to see more surveyors in our profession pass the APC. Starting at the very beginning, the first insight in this series is about deciding your route to membership via the APC and is relevant to candidates following all pathways. The options are:

1️⃣ RICS accredited degree – 24 months of structured training and a minimum of 96 hours of continuing professional development (CPD)
2️⃣ RICS accredited degree and at least five years of relevant experience – 12 months of structured training and a minimum of 48 hours of CPD
3️⃣ RICS accredited degree and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience – Minimum of 48 hours of CPD over the preceding 12 months
4️⃣ Bachelor degree or higher (or membership of an RICS approved professional body) with a minimum of five years of relevant experience – Successful preliminary review and a minimum of 48 hours of CPD

If you have at least five years of relevant experience, we have found the preliminary review route to membership to be beneficial to candidates. It removes the requirement for structured training and means that submissions are reviewed by a trained professional and determined to be suitable (or not!) to proceed to the assessment interview. It’s a helpful indication that the submission element of the assessment is on the right track.

Once you have selected your route to membership, you will need a counsellor (who must be a chartered surveyor), a supervisor (optional) and three proposers/seconders (all three must be MRICS or FRICS and can include your counsellor).
